The discovery of this slab of basalt stone found at Rosetta in the Western Delta in 1779 has led to the translation of the Egyptian hieroglyphs. The stone was written in three sections and each section had a different script. The top section was in hieroglyphs. The middle part was written indemotic, which was the popular script of the XXVI Dynasty (700-600 BC ) and widely used for the next thousand years in Egypt. The final section (bottom) was in Greek.

The Rosetta Stone was a "thank you note" from the priests to the Greek ruler of Egypt, Ptolemy V, who reigned in the 2nd century BC for the favors he allowed them. French archeologist, Jean-Francois Champollion spent many yeas deciphering the symbols of the stone and led to its translation.
