Here are some ways to put art to work in your interior decorating. First decide where to hang the picture or wall relief.. Avoid hanging one small picture on a huge expanse of wall - art looks better when it seems to extend the lines of furniture, windows or doorways or when several small pieces are grouped together. Hang your artwork at eye level. Find the halfway point between the eye level of a 6’5” person and a 5’2” person for your picture or wall hanging. Check that you’re not hanging a heavy wall relief on wallboard only. Heavy artwork should be hung on studs. What is a stud, you ask? A stud is a wooden 2x4 or 2x6 that makes up inside of wall. You can find the studs by gently rapping on the wall. The stud is found when you hear a hollow sound as you rap. Next, hold the picture or wall hanging up and make a small pencil mark where the top edge of the picture will be. Then, holding the picture's wire taut, measure from the wire (or from the hanging tab) to the frame's top edge. Measure down that distance from the pencil mark you made on the wall and mark that spot - that's where the hook will go for your work of art. Talking about hooks, you will need to find one that is strong enough for your wall hanging or picture. Hooks are available in many sizes and strengths. You can use a two-piece nail-and-hook, or a hollow-wall anchor for heavier objects such as those made from bonded stone. Nail the picture hook where you just made the mark. Step away several feet to judge is the artwork is straight. If the wall relief or picture isn't straight, adjust it ever so slightly on the hook and your done!
